Across Kenya’s coastal communities, thousands of coconut husks are discarded daily — piling up in dumpsites and open fields, creating waste instead of opportunity.
Through the Coconut Husk Recycling Campaign, the Afrikan Women Diversity Centre (AWDC) is transforming this overlooked resource into a sustainable pathway for women’s empowerment and environmental conservation.
The campaign trains and equips women in Mombasa and surrounding coastal regions to recycle coconut husks into marketable eco-products — from household items and handicrafts to biodegradable garden materials. By doing so, AWDC is turning what was once waste into livelihood, innovation, and environmental change.
This initiative is not just about recycling — it’s about redefining value, restoring dignity, and building sustainable women-led economies.
Campaign Goals
Our goal is to create a circular, women-driven model that links environmental sustainability with economic empowerment. Through this campaign, we aim to build capacity, create jobs, and reduce waste — one husk at a time.
Specific Goals:
Empower Women Entrepreneurs:
Train and support women to develop businesses from coconut by-products such as fibers, ropes, mats, and eco-crafts.
Promote Environmental Sustainability:
Reduce coconut waste in coastal areas by recycling husks into usable, biodegradable products.
Drive Innovation in Green Manufacturing:
Introduce creative uses for recycled coconut material in interior décor, packaging, and sustainable agriculture.
Boost Local Economies:
Create income opportunities for women and youth in the value chain — from collection and processing to product marketing.
Provide Skills Training & Market Access:
Offer workshops on product design, branding, and market linkage to ensure women can sell their creations locally and internationally.
Foster Community Partnerships:
Work with local governments, environmental agencies, and private sector players to scale the initiative and establish sustainable recycling hubs.
